Steven plays hockey professionally. He presently plays in the ECHL, a lesser level, with the Jacksonville Icemen.
Steven played Division I hockey for three years at Lake Superior State University, despite playing baseball for a short while. Before agreeing to his first NFL contract with the Washington Capitals, he participated in the ECHL from 2008 to 2013.
Before signing a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015, Steven was a member of the Caps. As a member of the Penguins' championship squad in 2016, he won the Stanley Cup. In 2017, the professional athlete was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he played for their minor league team. Later that year, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks, where he played for their AHL minor league affiliate.
He has since played for a number of minor league teams. Before rejoining the Icemen in December 2025, he concluded his minor league career in 2022.
ESE Hockey, a summer hockey league including a professional, elite, high school, and women's division, was founded by Steven as well.
